The official foundation of the current school originates from a royal warrant dated March 1551 although evidence of the school exists from as far back as the 13th Century and possibly even earlier. The school has been located on its present Broomfield Road site since 1892 and has grown steadily in size ever since, expanding very rapidly in the last twenty years. Girls have been able to join the Sixth Form since 1976. Many aspects of the school’s ethos are rooted in our history as a traditional Grammar School; all students learn Latin in the lower school, a formal uniform is worn throughout the school and senior staff wear gowns in assemblies.
The CCF has a long tradition of it own, going back over 100 years and the magnificent Corps of Drums plays an important role in celebrating our history. The Old Chelmsfordians Association is very active with members – some of whom attended KEGS in the 1930s – retaining a close interest in the modern school’s activities.
KEGS is now, however, very much a 21st Century Grammar School, preparing students for the demands of a turbulent, ever-changing world where flexible skills and a global perspective are absolutely essential. Within the traditional exterior walls, we have very modern facilities including a state-of-the-art computer network and sophisticated communication systems. A KEGS education is highly contemporary.
