Academic Monitoring

Whilst an obsession with data is not always an effective way of furthering student knowledge, it is recognised at KEGS that academic monitoring does have an important place within the school’s systems. At two points in the year, students receive a set of grades across their subjects, and in addition to this, there is a full report with grades and comments once a year, as well as a parents evening. Initially at the start of each key stage the emphasis in these grading sessions is on effort alone ensuring each student is performing at their own best level.  However, after this, attainment and effort grades are regularly given, to enable students, parents and pastoral staff to ascertain how students are performing.  In the lower school attainment grades are on a KEGS scale, but with the approach of public exams in the middle school, and the sixth form, students are graded against national standards.

Once the grades have been given, Heads of Year and Heads of Section analyse the data in a number of ways to identify any underperformance, and then discuss and put in place supportive strategies. Where there are only issues within one subject it may be more appropriate for support to come from a teacher or department, but where there are identified issues across the board, parents will be involved and mentoring systems or other measures put in place.
