The image of a stuffy old Grammar school with traditional, old-fashioned teaching methods is very far from the reality at KEGS. Our teachers are all highly qualified, with expert subject knowledge, but our whole approach is based on the understanding that learning is what really matters. As a Leading Edge Partnership school, we have adopted the concept of a Research-Engaged Learning Community in which students and teachers work collaboratively and all teachers actively engage in developing new ideas to improve the quality of learning in their areas. At KEGS we take the ideas behind ‘assessment for learning’ and ‘student voice’ very seriously and students engage in a lot of collaborative learning activities and projects.
KEGS has gained Highly Performing Specialist School status following the success of our work as a Science College. We have now also adopted a second specialism as a Language College. These initiatives give students the opportunities to engage in a range of interesting activities including working with students from our partner schools. IT plays an important role in learning, giving students the opportunity to express their ideas in a variety of formats and to engage in extensive research-based or problem-solving activities. We are in the process of developing an exciting student-led programme for teaching IT whereby older students plan and teach IT lessons to younger students, free from the constraints of any exam syllabus.
