The pastoral system at KEGS operates at three levels - Form Tutor, Head of Year, and Head of Section (Lower School, Middle School or Sixth Form) - so that at every stage there are three possible points of contact available to all students and parents. Form tutors will typically handle day to day matters and give advice where needed; in addition the school has a commitment that every student will be seen individually at least once per academic year by their form tutor in order to discuss all aspects of their life at school. In consultation with the Head of Section, Heads of Year typically handle a wide range of issues concerning student welfare and happiness, as well as dealing with discipline issues where necessary.
Concerns over attendance and punctuality, as well as more serious welfare issues may also involve the Head of Year, but will often be picked up by the Head of Section. Across this, the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and outside agencies and organisations work with students where there are specific needs or where therapeutic intervention is necessary. This can be either on a very temporary short term basis, throughout a student’s career at KEGS, or anywhere in-between these two timescales. The entire pastoral system is overseen by a Deputy Headteacher.
